No Time for Rest
Seeing a single wolf on the rise, I get a chill thinking it could be Stark. How he could be here, I donât know; but Sebastian is here, and if anyone is equipped to navigate the passages between the realms, it would be Stark. Maybe thatâs why heâs been venturing off into the forest without notice. Of course, I have no idea how a giant white wolf would give notice exactly, but I guess thatâs why he hasnât given notice. Heâs a wolf.
âYou donât think thatâsâ¦,â I start.
âNo,â Sebastian says, stopping me. âThe mere fact that youâre thinking it almost completely negates it.â
âWell, thatâs pretty negative.â
âI just donât want you to get your hopes up. I know how badly youâd like for him to be here.â
âI donât know why weâre standing around here,â Gilmus says as he walks past us. âIf thatâs the way weâre going, then letâs go before Fafnir comes back.â
Gilmus has a point. I have no idea where I sent Fafnir by cutting a hole in the air like I did. Every other time Iâve done it, Iâve been the one to go through the opening. Not to mention, every single time Iâve stepped through the gash, Iâve had no clue where Iâd end up. Itâs not like I cut open the air in front of me with a destination in mind. Maybe the seax knows or maybe itâs some other mystical force creating a path for me. All I know is that when I left Park Sessions, I met Gilmus; and when we left the start circle, we landed in Writhear Sea. Admittedly, the seax has come in handy. I like it almost as much as my bearded axes.
Sebastian and I follow Gilmus as we walk toward the wolf-topped hill. The sun continues to get lower in the sky so by the time we reach the hill it should be dark and most likely the wolf will be gone.
âSo, what do you think, Gilmus?â I ask. âWill that be the toughest challenge we face?â
Being more focused on walking than talking, Gilmus doesnât break stride. He doesnât look back. He keeps driving toward our destination as he replies, âNo.â
I wait for him to say more; to explain what he means, but Gilmus continues to lead the way in silence. I contemplate asking him to explain, but decide to join him in our silent march. With each step I think about our venture into Fafnirâs lair in what we thought was a pursuit for a piece of gold. Maybe thatâs what Gilmus is thinking about. Maybe heâs thinking about his brother Garley, about once again not coming away with any gold, and about the narrow escape from Fafnirâs flames. And then again, maybe heâs thinking about what deadly challenge weâll face next.
We walk in silence for at least twenty minutes before we reach the hill. I was right. Itâs dark now and the wolf is gone. I guess it wasnât Stark because heâd still be here.
