No Time for Rest

Seeing a single wolf on the rise, I get a chill thinking it could be Stark. How he could be here, I don’t know; but Sebastian is here, and if anyone is equipped to navigate the passages between the realms, it would be Stark. Maybe that’s why he’s been venturing off into the forest without notice. Of course, I have no idea how a giant white wolf would give notice exactly, but I guess that’s why he hasn’t given notice. He’s a wolf.

“You don’t think that’s…,” I start.

“No,” Sebastian says, stopping me. “The mere fact that you’re thinking it almost completely negates it.”

“Well, that’s pretty negative.”

“I just don’t want you to get your hopes up. I know how badly you’d like for him to be here.”

“I don’t know why we’re standing around here,” Gilmus says as he walks past us. “If that’s the way we’re going, then let’s go before Fafnir comes back.”

Gilmus has a point. I have no idea where I sent Fafnir by cutting a hole in the air like I did. Every other time I’ve done it, I’ve been the one to go through the opening. Not to mention, every single time I’ve stepped through the gash, I’ve had no clue where I’d end up. It’s not like I cut open the air in front of me with a destination in mind. Maybe the seax knows or maybe it’s some other mystical force creating a path for me. All I know is that when I left Park Sessions, I met Gilmus; and when we left the start circle, we landed in Writhear Sea. Admittedly, the seax has come in handy. I like it almost as much as my bearded axes.

Sebastian and I follow Gilmus as we walk toward the wolf-topped hill. The sun continues to get lower in the sky so by the time we reach the hill it should be dark and most likely the wolf will be gone.

“So, what do you think, Gilmus?” I ask. “Will that be the toughest challenge we face?”

Being more focused on walking than talking, Gilmus doesn’t break stride. He doesn’t look back. He keeps driving toward our destination as he replies, “No.”

I wait for him to say more; to explain what he means, but Gilmus continues to lead the way in silence. I contemplate asking him to explain, but decide to join him in our silent march. With each step I think about our venture into Fafnir’s lair in what we thought was a pursuit for a piece of gold. Maybe that’s what Gilmus is thinking about. Maybe he’s thinking about his brother Garley, about once again not coming away with any gold, and about the narrow escape from Fafnir’s flames. And then again, maybe he’s thinking about what deadly challenge we’ll face next.

We walk in silence for at least twenty minutes before we reach the hill. I was right. It’s dark now and the wolf is gone. I guess it wasn’t Stark because he’d still be here.
